The Florida roadtrip continues!
I joined Bonnier Corp Publishing Group and staff from Scuba Diving magazine for a staff trip down to West Palm Beach, Florida. All work and no play is no fun; this group loves to get in the water, not only write about it. We drove from the Winter Park (Orlando area) offices to dive a site called Blue Heron Bridge. This is touted as Florida’s best shore diving and is famous for finding interesting macro photography subjects hiding in the sand and on the pilings. It was a beautiful calm, sunny south Florida day perfect for getting in the water!
In addition to hosting my visit, Bonnier Publishing partners with the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society providing a summer internship program. It was fun meeting and diving with the 2012 intern, Alec Neilson. Alec is originally from Arizona and has a background in journalism. It’s great to learn from her perspective about new ways to share ocean stories. I feel so fortunate to be part of an OWUSS family which makes these opportunities available for achieving young leaders. To learn more about her work with BonnierCorp, check out Alec’s blogs under Internship Journeys.
I spent today at the Bonnier Group offices in Winter Park learning all that goes into publishing a dive magazine. Scuba Diving and Sport Diver magazine are run by superhero staffs! It’s only a tiny group (fewer than 5) of editors, writers, and artists who bring this award-winning content to your newsstand. I sat in on a ‘wall session’ debating several options for an upcoming cover. There are so many factors which play into the choice but none as important as gut feeling/ appeal. I know readers will be thrilled with the final choice!
I also spent part of the afternoon in the photo studio helping shoot dive computers for an upcoming feature. Next time you read a magazine, take a second to appreciate how glossy and appealing a photographer has been able to make the featured inanimate object. Observing the office it was eye-opening to learn about the trends moving toward digital media. Brand Director Eric Michael shared with me many of his social media marketing tips which have helped the magazine reach nearly 14,000 Facebook likes! I am thrilled to announce I’ll be contributing as an author for upcoming web content! It’s my great joy sharing the ocean with new readers and inspiring ocean literacy, wonder and conservation. Stay tuned for new stories!
