A Bubble-Free Zone

25 August, 2010 (01:19) | 2010 Scholar Journey, Uncategorized | No comments

The breathing-gas economy has a lot to do with it (think about spending 8 hours underwater with only two 3 liter tanks), and the idea of doing surface intervals underwater is definitely exciting, but it was the lack of bubbles – the complete and utter silence – that really sold me on rebreathers.  On our [...]

Shooting for National Geographic

23 July, 2010 (23:02) | 2010 Scholar Journey, Uncategorized | No comments

First, an apology for slacking on the blog posts.  While I was in Mbotyi for the Sardine Run I was completely out of internet contact.  I got back to NYC and had two days to dry out, repack my gear, do laundry, and fill out expense reports before hopping on a plane to the Dominican [...]

The Greatest Shoal on Earth

23 July, 2010 (23:02) | 2010 Scholar Journey, Scholar Journey's, Uncategorized | 4 comments

While Cape Town was an unforgettable experience, nothing could come close to the excitement of the Sardine Run.  Every year, cold currents push their way up the eastern coast of South Africa, bringing with them millions of sardines that typically reside in the southern waters of the country.  It’s unclear where the sardines end up, [...]

Lake Mead National Recreation Area-Diving in the Desert

7 July, 2010 (22:04) | 2010 NPS Intern, Internship Journey's, Uncategorized | 2 comments

I was wondering how anything survives out here, and then I learned about the Quagga mussels which have completely taken over everything in Lake Mead. After diving in the lake, I saw for myself that Quagga mussels are definitely the most abundant creature down there…

Unbelievable Whities!

22 June, 2010 (02:11) | 2010 Scholar Journey, Uncategorized | 3 comments

What an entirely unbelievable experience!  On Friday I had the privilege of diving with the most famous fish in the sea – the great white shark!  Gansbaai, three hours south of Cape Town, is arguably the great white shark diving capital of the world.  And it wouldn’t take much arguing.  Discovery Channel, Nat Geo, BBC’s [...]

Cape Town at Last!

9 June, 2010 (20:13) | 2010 Scholar Journey, Uncategorized | No comments

Well I made it through a relatively painless 2 day set of flights from NYC-Dubai-Cape Town and arrived all in one piece!  The flights were long but comfortable, it was the overnight layover in Dubai which left something to be desired… I realize now that I should’ve taken a photo of myself curled up in [...]
